OSAGE CITY—Five Osage County shoppers received extra cash totaling $2,560 Saturday morning, during the fifth annual Christmas On Us grand prize drawing. The Christmas On Us promotion rewards people for shopping at home.

Particularly thrilled were Jeri Spicer and Julie Powell, winners of the two $1,000 grand prizes.

Julie Powell, Osage City, was unable to attend the grand prize drawing and had given her tickets to her daughter, Haly Tyson, Osage City, to watch for a winning number. When her ticket number was called by Jim Ullery, owner of Jim’s Garage, Scranton, she was surprised. She thought she had just won $250, but moments later, realized it was the $1,000 prize.
“My mom better split this with me,” Tyson said, joking.

A blue ticket from Jerry’s Thriftway, Osage City, was called just before Tyson’s number, but went unclaimed.

Jan Ogleby, advertising sales consultant for The Herald-Chronicle, drew the final ticket for the $1,000 grand prize. She first drew a blue ticket from Branine Chevrolet-Buick, which went unclaimed, and then a yellow ticket from Skip’s Thriftway, also unclaimed. The third ticket she drew was Powell’s ticket, which came from Osage Building Materials, Osage City.

Spicer, of Osage City, was excited to be a Christmas on Us winner. She said she wasn’t sure exactly what she would buy with her prize money, but would enjoy spending it at the participating merchants. When asked how it felt to win $1,000, Spicer said, “Good – now I don’t have to go to the casino!”

Shannon Stevens, owner of Relaxation Station, Osage City, drew a winning $250 ticket from the hopper. The ticket she drew was held by Carolyn Wilson, Lyndon. Wilson said she would spend her winnings on car repairs. Wilson’s winning ticket came from Hanna’s Auto Repair, Lyndon.

Debbie McKissick-Martin, of Caffe Thyme, Lyndon, drew a winning $250 ticket held by Stacey Handly, Osage City. Handly said she did all of her Christmas shopping in Osage County to collect the Chrismtas on Us tickets, and would use her winnings to pay off credit at some of the stores. Handly’s winning ticket came after nine tickets had been pulled and went unclaimed. Her winning ticket came from Osage Hardware, Osage City.

The Christmas On Us drawing was held in the Osage City High School auditorium. The four-week promotion was organized by The Osage County Herald-Chronicle and sponsored by 37 Osage County businesses.

The Herald-Chronicle staff worked with a few local businesses to offer several door prizes during the grand prize drawing Saturday. Winners included the person who traveled the farthest, best Christmas socks, best Christmas joke and someone with a birthday on or near Christmas Day. Prizes were pool passes from Osage City Parks and Recreation, ground coffee from Osage City Chamber of Commerce, a one-year subscription to The Herald-Chronicle, and two $10 checks and caps from Kansas State Bank, to be used in a Christmas on Us sponsor’s business in Scranton or Overbrook.

During the four-week promotion, there were 10 $50 prizes available to give away, which required shoppers to search for their ticket numbers in advertisements found in The Herald-Chronicle. By matching their ticket numbers with those hidden in the ads, shoppers could claim $50 in scrip money at The Herald-Chronicle by noon Tuesday each week.

Nine of the 10 instant prizes were claimed prior to Saturday’s drawing, which left one to be given away at the drawing.

Five tickets were drawn by Amanda McNish, of Rustic Treasures, Overbrook, and went unclaimed before the winning $50 ticket holder, Ranell Sleichter, claimed her prize.

Sleichter, of Scranton, received her ticket from Jim’s Garage, Scranton. She said she would likely use her winnings on purchasing gas.

“During this year’s contest, there were approximately 114,000 tickets given away, which translates to participants spending more than $1,140,000 for merchandise and services,” said Chris Faimon, co-publisher of The Herald-Chronicle.

“The contest rewards people for spending their money locally. It also rewards the participating businesses, since the scrip money can only be spent at those businesses who signed on as sponsors,” Faimon said.

One $50 instant prize was claimed during the fourth and final week of the contest. Lori Bloomquist, Osage City, claimed $50 in scrip money after seeing her ticket number in the ad for Feltner Floors and Furniture, Lyndon. She obtained her ticket from a purchase she made at Aunt Dee’s BP, Osage City, and plans to split the money with her husband, Daniel, and use it on gas and groceries.

The other winning ticket printed in Christmas on Us ads in the Dec. 15 edition, but not claimed, was hidden in the Skip’s Thriftway, Carbondale, ad with a ticket from Lyndon Building Materials.

Previous instant winners of $50 scrip money were: Week 1: Johnni Tosh, Linda Ullery, Danielle Garrison and Michelle Hoopes; Week 2: Janet Donnelly; Week 3: Jennifer Burkdoll, Charles “Tug” Atchison and Tosha Meek.
