Accident claims Burlingame toddler

A 2-year-old boy died Monday from injuries suffered in a three-car accident that happened Sunday afternoon near Scranton.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) report, Jacob Hefley, 2, Burlingame, died Monday afternoon at Stormont-Vail HealthCare, Topeka, from injuries received in the accident on U.S. Highway 56, about four miles east of Burlingame.

The KHP report said Anna Hefley, 26, Burlingame, was driving a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer eastbound at 2:42 p.m. Sept. 20 and slowed to turn north on South Wanamaker Road, when her vehicle was struck from the rear by a 2003 Beaver motor home driven by Cleveland O. Lovvorn, 76, Kempner, Texas. Debris from the accident then damaged a westbound 1994 Ford pickup driven by Wilma M. Barber, 70, Overbrook.

In addition to Anna and Jacob, passengers in Hefley’s vehicle were Lisa Hefley, 7, Joseph Hefley, 6, and Mark Hefley, 1. All were injured and transported to Stormont-Vail. Lovvorn was not injured in the accident, although a passenger in the motor home, Zela C. Lovvorn, 67, was listed as possibly injured in the KHP report, but was not transported to a hospital. Neither Barber nor her passenger, Robert Barber, 76, was injured.

The report indicated all drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts or were belted in child safety restraints at the time of the accident.
