Parks named Mr. & Mrs. Osage City
Rosie Blacketer | Staff Writer
The 2009 Osage City Fair Parade will be 6:30 p.m. July 23, and promises
to be a celebration for this year’s Mr. and Mrs. Osage City.
Chosen for that honor are Lois and Al Park. Carolyn Hensley has
been named the grand marshal, and with the Parks, will reign over
the parade. This year’s parade theme is “Osage City
Going Green.”
The Parks, of Osage City, were surprised to hear that they were
named recipients of the title.
Al was born and raised in Marysville, and attended the school of
pharmacy University of Kansas, Lawrence. While attending college
he met Lois Edwards, who was attending Lawrence High School. They
met through Al’s brother who was dating Lois’ best friend.
Al Park and Lois Edwards were married June 12, 1956, at Lawrence.
They moved to Topeka, where they lived for 15 years before moving
to Osage City in 1971. They purchased M&M Drugs from Mel and
Mabel Bowlin and opened Park Pharmacy on Jan. 18, 1971. They sold
the drugstore in June 2002 and it is now operated as Gibson TrueCare
Pharmacy.
“Osage City is a great small town and we have enjoyed our
time here,” Lois said. “We are glad that we purchased
a business here because it has been a great place to raise our family.”
The family they raised consisted of two children. Susan Patton and
husband, Larry, Lawrence, and Sarah Granger and husband, Bill, Overbrook.
They have two grandchildren, John Granger, Lawrence, and Rosalie
Granger, Overbrook.
“We were honored, surprised and a little shocked,” Lois
said.
Lois volunteers at the Osage City Public Library, school and United
Methodist Church. Al also does volunteer work at the school and
church. He also fills in work at Gibson Pharmacy, just to help out
when they need him.
They enjoy their retirement by square dancing, traveling, playing
Scrabble, and going for walks.
Hensley
named parade marshal
Rosie Blacketer | Staff Writer
Carolyn Hensley, a lifelong resident of Osage City, will be the
2009 Osage City Parade Grand Marshal.
“I am honored to be the marshal,” Hensley said. “I
couldn’t figure out why I was picked and they said I have
been around a long time, and I have been.”
She grew up on a farm near Osage City. She worked while attending
school for Dr. Sexton.
While working for Sexton, she met her future husband, Ronald. They
married June 24, 1950, at a minister’s house in Topeka. They
owned and operated Ronald’s Beauty Salon and Variety Store,
Osage City. They were married for almost 55 years when he died.
They had two children, Bruce and Todd, who reside in the Osage City
area. They also had twins that died. She has two granddaughters
and four great-grandchildren who all live in Reading.
Hensley worked for Dr. Sexton for 11 years, Park Pharmacy, 14 years,
and Gibson Pharmacy for five years, and continues to volunteer at
ECKAT. She enjoys playing bridge and spending time with grandchildren.
“I am so pleased to have been chosen for this honor,”
she said.
