The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Pomona and Melvern lakes will host National Get Outdoors Day 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 13, an annual event to incourage healthy, active outdoor fun.

In partnership with federal, state and local agencies, the Corps will offer opportunities for families to experience traditional and non-traditional types of outdoor activities. Each event will feature a mixture of information centers and outdoor activities geared towards both adults and children. Fees at the federal parks will be waived for the day.

The day begins at both lakes at 9 a.m. Events include a sporting clays open house, trail rides, horseshoe throwing tournament, water safety information, children’s fishing derby, and demonstrations on water skiing, ATVs and wind surfing.

The city of Melvern will also host an outdoor event, highlighting the community’s riverfront park and trails, where several walks and runs will happen. Planned are five-kilometer and one-mile runs, with several age divisions including one for children.

Lyndon will be the site of a geocaching event, a treasure-hunting type game in which participants use GPS technology to locate hidden caches.
