Mundy brings home silver, bronze

Jeremy Gaston | Sports Editor

WICHITA—Santa Fe Trail senior Jodi Mundy ended a highly successful track career right where she wanted to be - among the best.

Mundy took home two bronze medals and one silver medal from her fourth and final trip to the State Track Meet in Wichita Friday and Saturday, leading SFT’s girls to a 10th place team finish.

“I’m pretty happy,” Mundy said after earning her third medal Saturday. “I beat a lot of people I wasn’t supposed to beat.”

Mundy’s performance was her best effort of her four trips to state. She began each event with solid qualifying times, and improved each effort by one place in the finals. In the 100-meter dash, Mundy qualified fourth in 12.96 seconds then took third in 12.75; in the 200, she was fourth in the preliminaries in 26.26, running a nearly-identical race in the final to finish third in 26.28.

Her best qualifying position was in the 400, where she finished third in the preliminaries in 59.33. She moved up again in finals, placing third in 58.74. She also competed in the 4x400 relay with Hayley Shaffer, Devin Ramsey and Shara Luther, with the team placing 14th in 4:20.74.

The graduated athlete has yet to commit to a school, but ends her high school career with 11 medals for top-seven finishes at the state meet, including four silver medals and two bronze medals.

“She’s got to rank up there with one of the top all-time single athletes in a single sport to come from the county,” said SFT Coach Lucas Boss. “She scored over 1,100 points in her career, and has never missed a race or meet. That’s pretty amazing for a track athlete that runs what she runs.”

Mundy’s 20 points from the three sprints single-handedly placed the Lady Chargers in a three-way tie for 10th place, but using her individual skill to help bring up the team has been something she’s done throughout her high school career.

“She only competed in three individual events every year,” Boss said. “She could have medaled individually in a variety of other events. By running in a relay, she helped as many as 15 girls get the experience of state track by giving up an individual event. As much as she did on her own, she did a lot as a team.”

The Lady Chargers were also represented by Valerie Schirmer, who placed 13th in the shot put at 34 feet and one-half inch, and Devin Ramsey, who was 15th in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.78. The team of Shaffer, Whitney Wilson, Hailey Clemons and Luther placed 13th in the 4x800 relay in 10:43.65.

The Santa Fe Trail boys’ team competed in four events at the state meet, led by Jesse Bahner, who earned the team’s only medal with a fourth-place finish in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches. Bahner cleared each of his jumps on his first attempt before stalling at 6-6.

Garrett Morrison narrowly missed medaling in the pole vault, finishing in eighth place at 12-6. Drake Stewart led the entire first lap of the 1600 meters before finishing 10th in 4:39.74; and Quentin Capra was 12th in the 3200 meters in 10:36.05.

The SFT boys tied for 34th with 4 team points.

“I thought we had an awesome season,” Boss said. “Our boys did really well. They won four meets and really surprised me as individuals and as a team.

“We don’t have a ton of girls that scored points, but we had a lot of quality girls that worked hard,” Boss continued. “We just had a really good season.”

Bartee achieves improvement, medals

WICHITA—Gold eluded Osage County track teams last weekend, but county teams still brought home eight top-seven medals from the State Track and Field Meet Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.

Santa Fe Trail led the way with half of the medals, with three of the medals earned by senior Jodi Mundy.

Osage City senior Tyler Bartee was the only other athlete from the county to earn multiple medals. Bartee had qualified in all three sprints, placing third in the 200 meters in 22.48 seconds and third in the 400 meters in 50.41.

Bartee also entered the 100 meter preliminaries Saturday morning with one of the state’s top four times, but finished the race in 11.72, a full second off his season-best time of 10.71. He finished fourth in his heat, but 10th overall, failing to qualify by 2 hundredths of a second.

“The 100 was terrible,” Bartee said. “I was having shoe problems, or wore unlucky socks…”

Bartee had already qualified in the 200 and 400 meters Friday, and put the morning’s shortcomings behind him with back-to-back third-place finishes.

“I felt a lot better – more loose and ready,” he said, also pleased with the final meet of his high school career. “It was better than last year. All I wanted was improvement.”

The 100 meters bit the Indians twice in the meet, as their 4x100 relay team also failed to qualify for the finals as Bartee, Jordan Tice, Justin Cooley and Sultan Cousin placed 11th between the two heats in 45.71.

The Indians were also represented by Blake Stoppel, who concluded his high school career with a 10th-place finish in the 1600 meters in 4:41.80 and a 12th-place finish in the 3200 in 10:41.20.

Cally Aspegren was the lone qualifier for the Lady Indians, placing ninth in the 3200 meters in 12:38.25.

Fagan fourth in shot put

WICHITA—Burlingame athletes qualified for seven events at the state meet, turning in several competitive times, along with one medal-worthy effort.

Lady Bearcat junior Miranda Fagan medaled for the second straight year in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet and one-half inch, with five solid throws as she placed fourth in Class 2A.

Cory Smart competed in two events, placing 13th in the shot put at 42-2.75 and tying for 14th in the long jump at 17-8.5. Dustin Droege was 12th in the 1600 in 4:52.25 and Cole Carlson placed 13th in the 3200 in 10:37.57.

The team of Ty Lang, Josh Briggs, Droege and James Clem placed 15th in the 4x400 relay in 3:47.67.

Lady Bearcat Shelby Ullmer qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, but was called for a false start and was not allowed to compete.

Zabel seventh in discus

WICHITA—Marais des Cygnes Valley senior Michael Zabel led the Trojans at the state track meet, qualifying for two events and earning the team’s only medal.

Zabel returned to the discus, where he placed 12th in 2008 with a throw of 124 feet. He topped last year’s distance on his first throw at 139-4, good enough to put him in the finals. Zabel was unable to improve on his first throw, nor repeat his regional mark of 151 feet, settling for seventh in the event.

Zabel returned with teammate Chad Forrer for the shot put, where Forrer placed 14th with a top throw of 41-8.5. Zabel was 16th at 38-11.

The Lady Trojans were represented by Emily Phelon, who debuted at the state meet with a 13th-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:34.16.

Tigers run, jump through 11 events

WICHITA—The Lyndon Tigers made their mark by state qualifying for a total of 11 events last weekend. The Tigers, however, were unable to break into the medals, despite several strong performances.

Daniel Wilson came closest with a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries in 16.23. Wilson, however, finished eighth in 16.82. He was also 12th in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.72. Dylan Filburn also neared the medals with an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:02.85.

The Lyndon boys qualified in all three relays, with Jake Owens, Derek Banzhaf, Matt Janssen and Filburn placing 10th in the 4x400 in 3:35.69; Banzhaf, Wilson, Justin Payne and Filburn were 11th in the 4x800 in 8:44.63; and Trey Brown, Janssen, Owens and Filburn were 14th in the 4x100 in 46.99.

Janssen was 14th in the 200 in 23.93; and Brown was 15th in the triple jump at 38.7.75.

Courtney Cox turned in a solid effort for the Lyndon girls’ team, placing 10th in the 400-meters in 1:03.47. Jenny Neuenschwander was 14th in the 1600 meters in 6:09.35.

The Lady Tigers’ team of Shawna Bitts, Cox, Malori Gales and Elaina Spencer placed 13th in the 4x800 in 10:54.10.
