PITTSBURG—Seven Osage County golfers will be competing in
state golf tournaments Tuesday.
The Lyndon High School boys’ team led the way with a third-place
finish at the Class 2A Regional Golf Tournament at St. Mary’s-Colgan
on Monday. The finish qualifies all six members of the team.
Lyndon finished at 288, following Colgan (315) and Pleasanton (357),
while beating out Marmaton Valley (391), Olpe (414) and Oswego (445).
Humbolt, Sedan and Uniontown also competed.
“Even though everyone didn't have their best scores of the
year, they were definitely excited to qualify for state,”
said Lyndon Golf Coach Judy Patterson. “Pittsburg is a tough
course so I was very pleased with the players efforts.”
Nick Walsh led the Lyndon players with an 86, finishing sixth overall.
David Spencer finished at 97, Josh Decker at 101, Ryan Patterson
at 104, Ryan Romine at 106 and Curtis Wendling 117.
The Lyndon varsity team will compete in the Class 2A State Tournament
May 27 at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.
The Osage City boys’ team sent just one golfer, Nathan Johnson,
to the Class 3A state meet. Johnson led the Osage City team with
a 93 at Herington Monday.
“I was proud of Nathan,” said Osage City Golf Coach
Tracy Watkins. “He overcame a terrible first hole and played
very well on his last 17 to qualify. It would have been easy to
mentally give up and he didn't.”
Derek Michael, finished second for the Indians with a 94, missing
qualifying by one stroke.
Austin Slimmer finished at 105, Landon Heward at 108, Lance Williamson
at 108 and Mitch Martin at 110.
Michael and Williamson were both graduating seniors.
“I would have liked to get others in, and we even had a good
chance to qualify our team, but it just wasn't our day,” Watkins
said. “It was a very good season.”
Johnson will play at the Class 3A State Tournament May 26 at Tallgrass
Country Club in Wichita.
Santa Fe Trail also had a good day, but not a great day, as the
Chargers’ hopes of sending golfers to the state meet were
not realized.
“[We expected] our team to qualify, however, it didn't work
that way for SFT,” said SFT Coach Mary Burgett.
The Chargers finished a solid fourth out of 11 teams at 366. Phoenix
Anshutz led the SFT golfers, medaling in ninth place, but narrowly
missing qualifying at 86.
“Unfortunately, he didn't make the state cut for individuals
at our regional,” Burgett said. “In Class 4A, only the
top two teams and the top five individuals who are not on a state
qualifying team advance.”
Jake Weber finished just behind Anshutz, 12th overall, at 88; Hank
Boyd finished at 93, Kyle McDaniel at 99 and Joseph Burgett at 107.
J.D. Payne also competed in the tournament, but withdrew before
the end of the meet. |
