Traffic accidents claimed the lives of two Osage County residents last week.

Nov. 24, Denise Ogle, 50, Scranton, was critically injured in a head-on collision at 6:20 p.m. on U.S. Highway 75. She died from her injuries the next day at Stormont-Vail Hospital, in Topeka.

The accident occurred at mile marker 137.5, approximately three miles south of Carbondale. According to a Kansas Highway Patrol report, Ogle’s 2004 Kia was headed southbound in the northbound lane when it collided with an Apria Healthcare utility van driven by James Robison, 44, Topeka. Robison swerved to miss Ogle’s car, but the vehicles struck head-on in the center of the highway. Robison was not injured. Both drivers had been wearing seatbelts.

County and state emergency personnel closed both lanes of the highway for about an hour during the extrication.

At 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a citizen who reported a vehicle on its side on Stanley Road, about three miles northwest of Quenemo.

At the accident site, a deputy found Matthew Soper, 22, Quenemo, who had died at the scene from his injuries.

According to the sheriff’s office, the 2004 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Soper landed on its side after rolling over at least once. The sheriff’s office reported Soper was southbound on Stanley Road when his vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason. The vehicle traveled in the east ditch a short distance before coming back on the road, then turned sideways and rolled, landing on its side in the west ditch and roadway.

Osage County Sheriff Laurie Dunn said it was unknown how much time elapsed after the accident occurred before it was reported. She said the gravel road was wet at the time, which could have contributed to the accident.

Soper was not wearing a seatbelt.
