SCRANTON—The city of Scranton has had its fair share of hard knocks in the last year. Most recently, Mark Knowles, hired to serve as Scranton’s police chief, submitted a letter of resignation, effective immediately, at the city council meeting Sept. 2. He had served in that capacity for less than three months.

Scranton Mayor Gary Burkdoll read aloud a portion of the resignation during the regular council meeting. “I’m not sure if he did or not,” Burkdoll told The Herald-Chronicle Tuesday night, when asked if Knowles gave a reason for leaving.

“The council received the letter,” said Bobi Morris, city clerk. “But they have not accepted it yet.”

Todd Luckman, who was hired Aug. 19 as the city’s attorney, was to review it and advise the council prior to action being taken at the next meeting. Luckman replaces Mark Works, who resigned July 16 as city attorney.

“We have two part-time officers who will pick up some slack, and the county will back us up,” Burkdoll said. “I will work as fast as I can to find a replacement. In fact, I will bring a name to the next meeting for the council to approve.”

Knowles could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

The next Scranton city council meeting will be 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 at city hall.
