Scranton man dies in rollover accident

A Scranton man died at the scene after a rollover accident in southern Shawnee County Sunday night. Three passengers in the car were also injured.

According to the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, Eric S. Kennedy, 24, was driving a 2003 Chevy Malibu on South Jordan Road, about a mile north of the Osage County line, when he attempted to make a westbound turn onto S.W. 103rd Street. Kennedy failed to negotiate the corner and the car went into a ditch, hit a culvert, and rolled at least twice before coming to rest overturned. The accident happened about 8:30 p.m.

Three passengers, Ashley J. Hale, 18, Scranton, Jerrid W. Johnston, 24, Topeka, and Bree Crawford, 19, Topeka, were transported to area hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Hale was taken to St. Francis Hospital, and Johnston and Crawford were taken to Stormont-Vail. Crawford was later flown to KU Medical Center, in Kansas City.

Kennedy and Crawford required extrication from the vehicle, but Hale and Johnston were able to get out on their own.

According to the accident report, Kennedy and Hale were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, but Johnston and Crawford were.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation as of Monday afternoon. Speed was thought to have been a factor in the accident.
