Lyndon players and fans celebrate following the Tigers’ 40-39 win over Marais des Cygnes Valley in the Class 2A Sub-State Finals Saturday at Wabaunsee High School in Alma. The Tigers play in the Class 2A State Tournament this week in Manhattan.

ALMA—The Lyndon Tigers’ basketball team beat Marais des Cygnes Valley 40-39 in a title fight between two top-ranked teams in the championship of the Class 2A Sub-State at Wabaunsee Saturday in Alma.

“It was exactly what I expected it to be,” said MdCV coach Tim Latham. “I told the boys it was going to be a cross between a heavyweight boxing match and a marathon.”

While the game included several point swings, the two teams stayed close throughout, especially at the end. With fouls and foul trouble coming into play, it was MdCV with the ball in the final seconds, unable to get a shot to fall against the Tigers’ stiff defense.

“In my opinion, Saturday was the state championship,” Latham said. “It could have went either way. One bounce of the ball, one free throw, and it’s a different ball game.”
