Hessong to lead USD 456 next year

MELVERN—The USD 456 Board of Education has selected Ted Hessong, principal at Frontenac High School, to take over as superintendent, beginning July.

“I was looking for a change in my professional career and it will take me to my next step in my career,” Hessong said. “Marais des Cygnes Valley offered me that opening and it was in a great location for me.”

Hessong will be taking the place of Darrel Finch, who will be retiring at the end of the school year.

“He’s enthusiastic about the job,” Finch said. “He targeted very carefully what job he applied for. I believe this was the only one.”

Hessong path developed though his relationship to the Greenbush Southeast Kansas Educational Service Center, which Hessong said helped guide him into the position.

He was born and raised in Fort Scott, and received a degree in education at Pittsburg State University. He taught and coached two years at Pleasanton High School, followed by 17 years as a science teacher and coach at Frontenac. Hessong served as the assistant principal at Frontenac Junior High, before returning to the high school as principal for the last five years.

“I’m excited to become part of their district,” Hessong said. “I met some great people at my interview there and it reminded me a lot of the culture and climate we have here at Frontenac.

Over the summer Hessong is looking to buy a home in the district, and looks forward to taking advantage of the outdoor life available in the area.
