OVERBROOK—The Eighth Annual Osage County Toy Run continued
its tradition of providing more for the families of Osage County
“We had $2,600 in cash and checks, and we had a ton of toys,”
said Kenna Burns, Osage County Coordinator for the East Central
Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation (ECKAN).
The ride, organized by the Flint Hills Chapter 49 of the Boozefighters
Motorcycle Club, brought in about as much cash as last year, along
with three times as many toys, making this the most productive year
“I think there was a lot more community outpouring,”
Burn said. “They tried a different approach, put out boxes
in places throughout the county.”
Members of the community placed toys in boxes at area stores, accounting
for a large part of the donate toys. The Boozefighters, however,
still brought a lot to the table.
The ride gathered at Conrad’s, in Overbrook, then headed down
U.S. Highway 56 en mass on the way to Four Corners Steakhouse and
Lounge at the junction of U.S. 56 and U.S. 75. There, the drawings
for around 500 raffle tickets, 50/50 cash drawing and numerous auction
items took place.
The auction items drew big money for the cause, including $250 for
a hand-made, three-foot wide Harley Davidson sign made by Chapter
49 President Craig “Kegger” Klingbeil, and $175 for
a new set of tires from Grasshopper Custom Paint, in Topeka.
The 50/50 cash drawing also raised over $300, following the return
of the winnings. In all, the total of cash, check and toy donations
was well over $5,000, surpassing last year’s $3,700 total.
“Seventy-five percent, if not more, of our donations are based
on the Boozefighers toy run every year,” Burns said. “Without
them, we wouldn’t be able to help as many families each year.”
As of Tuesday, ECKAN had received 112 applications for assistance
from Osage County families, and will continue to take applications
