Fall Fest is this weekend
Carbondale Fall Celebration will be held Sept. 11 to 12 with
activities planned for all ages both days.
On Friday the activities start at 5 p.m. with a dunk tank
and train rides. The Carbondale Library will be holding a
book sale from 6-8 p.m. From 6-10 p.m. “One Night Stand,”
will play at the street dance.
The fun continues on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. with a breakfast
in the ELM building. The library will continue the book sale
from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
At 10 a.m. Jandi’s Dance Performance Carbash will provide
entertainment.
The children’s parade begins at 11 a.m., along with
soap box car races. At noon the Masonic Lodge pie judging
contest begins. From 1-3 p.m. wrestling gets underway.
Bring your own turtle at 4 p.m. and enter the turtle races.
Prizes will be awarded for everyone. Four age groups will
compete including ages 2-4, 5-7,8-9, and 10-12. The grand
parade starts at 5 p.m., followed by another round of wrestling.
The band, One Night Stand, end the weekend events with a dance
from 8-11 p.m.
Towne named grand marshal
Ruth Towne was named grand marshal of the Carbondale Fall
Festival Parade to be held Sept. 12.
“I am honored to be chosen as grand marshal,”
Towne said. “I am truly committed to the community of
Carbondale as well as being their mayor.”
She was born north of Carbondale on the family farm July 23,
1933. She began school at Elliott, which was a country school
and later attended Carbondale grade school and high school
from which she graduated in 1951.
She has one brother, John Nichols, Carbondale, who still lives
on the family farm with his wife, Carolyn.
She married Harry Towne Jr., and they later divorced. She
has a daughter Nancy Warren, also of Carbondale.
“I have been a foster mother for over 27 years and had
many foster children,” Towne said.
She also has four grandsons and one granddaughter.
She worked for over 34 years at Security Benefit Group of
Companies, Topeka and over eight years at Kohl’s Department
Store, Topeka. She is now retired and enjoys doing work for
the city and watching her grandchildren in sports. She is
very active in her church, does volunteer work in the community
and enjoys embroidering.
