The Overbrook Children’s Fishing Pond officially opened to the public Saturday morning. The town celebrated the new recreational outlet with a youth fishing derby that morning to an overwhelming response.

“The turnout was great, and seeing them catch fish was great,” said Overbrook City Clerk Jim Koger. “I wish we could have had more people measuring.”

Organizers had hoped to draw around 30 youth anglers. More than 60 had registered by Friday, and twice that many showed up to fish Saturday morning.

“I heard there were 119,” Koger said. “It was about them being able to catch fish, and I think they were able to do that.”

The event was produced by the city, recreation commission and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. KDWP Fisheries Biologist Loenard Jirak was on hand for the derby, along with several members of the Overbrook Recreation Commission, all of whom played a role in the construction of the youth fishing pond.

As of Saturday, Overbrook Children’s Fishing Pond is now open to all youth 16 and under. The pond is open during daylight hours; creel limits are posted at the entrance.
