MELVERN—The summer’s first county celebration will be the 100th anniversary of Melvern Sunflower Days. The first of Osage County’s three fairs will begin Thursday, June 25, in Melvern.

4-H activities preceding the fair begin this weekend with the horse show at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Lyndon Saddle Club arena.

Next 4-Hers will participate in the goat and sheep shot at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, at the 4-H barns in the Melvern City Park.

The fair officially begins June 25, with 4-H entries from 8 a.m. to noon. Activities continue with the swine show at 6 p.m., baby show at 6:30, and bingo, karaoke and homemade ice cream at 8. The three-day carnival also begins that evening.

4-H Judging continues with hand pets, fowl and the beef show at 9 a.m. Friday, June 26. Entertainment on the second evening includes bingo and the talent show at 8 p.m.; and live entertainment at Legends at 9.

Fair activities run all day on Saturday, June 26. The day begins with a pancake race from 6 to 9 a.m., followed by kids races at the school. 4-H exhibits will be released at noon, with old-fashioned games in the city park at 12:30.

The final evening of the fair begins with the parade line-up at 6:15 followed by the parade at 7. The parade will feature the Cruz Line Drummers, a 25-member corps from Topeka High School.

Additional entries are welcome, with a $100 prize for the first-place winner.

Homemade ice cream and bingo will be served at 8, with live entertainment from the Barnyard Boys, Allie Rice and Evelyn Ervin at 8:15.

The fair will conclude with fireworks at nightfall following the entertainment.
