Carbondale fires full-time officer

Carbondale City Council terminated employment of a police officer during a special meeting Monday evening called for the purpose of considering personnel.

Carbondale council members George Reed, Mike Reynolds and Clint Vawter requested the special meeting. Also present at the meeting was Carbondale City Councilman Mike Reynolds; absent was Carbondale City Councilman Daryl Makowski.

The council and Mayor Ruth Towne met in executive session for 30 minutes before a motion was made by Reynolds, seconded by Reed, to terminate employment of officer Ralph Ritz immediately. The council approved the motion unanimously.

No reason was given publicly for Ritz’s termination. It was stated that Ritz was still under an employment probationary period, having been hired in March to fill one of two open positions. In February, the council terminated employment of two officers, Greg Wallace and Shane Quigley, also without stating a reason.

Following the action, the council met in executive session for 10 minutes, then voted to hire part-time police officer Marty Kane to fill the full-time position.
