SALINA—The Lyndon Tigers boys’ golf team concluded their season with a solid showing May 27 at the Class 2A Golf Tournament at Salina Municipal Golf Course, despite stormy weather conditions.

“I am extremely pleased with the performance these guys turned in, on not the most pleasant day for golf,” said Lyndon Golf Coach Judy Patterson. “As a team it is the best we have ever done at state.”

Lyndon placed eighth out of 12 teams at the tournament with a 364 team score. St. Mary’s-Colgan won the tight meet with a 323, followed by WaKeeney-Trego (333), Nemaha Valley (338), Syracuse (342), Pleasanton (342), Republic County (354), Smith Center (363), Lyndon, Washington County (369), Rawlins County (378), Kinsley (396) and Valley Heights (410).

The Tigers were led by Nick Walsh, who finished in an eight-way tie for 20th at 86. Ryan Romine finished six strokes back at 92, Ryan Patterson and David Spencer finished at 93, Josh Decker at 98 and Curtis Wendling at 101.

“Nick needs to be congratulated for his play at state and throughout the season,” Patterson said. “Even though he is just a freshman, he played today as though he was a veteran state golfer. I am looking forward to having him as well as the rest of the team back next year.”

Johnson takes 17th

WICHITA—Osage City junior Nathan Johnson made a solo trip to the Class 3A State Golf Tournament at Tallgrass Country Club in Wichita May 26, and returned with a 17th place finish.

“This is the first boys state medalist that Osage City has had in a long time,” said Osage City Coach Tracy Watkins.

Johnson tied for 17th with an 85 on the 6,758-yard, par 71 course, shooting a 43 on the front nine and shaving a stroke as he finished with a 42 on the back.

“I am very proud of Nathan,” Watkins said. “This was a very challenging course, and it was the best golf he has played. He handled the pressure of state very well.”

Tuesday’s meet was Johnson’s second trip to the state golf tournament, also qualifying as a freshman. He displayed that experience by hitting two birdies and four pars on his front nine.

“I think his first experience helped him know what to expect,” Watkins said. “He gave some strokes away missing some short putts, so his score could have been even better, but I thought he held his composure together well.”

Michael Gellerman, Sterling, won the meet at 70, 1 under par. Wichita-Collegiate took first as a team with a 314 team score, led by second-place finisher Andrew Hourani and third-place finisher Craig Howell.

There were 100 golfers in this year’s state tournament.
