MELVERN—Melvern Mayor Joe Warner presided over the Jan. 5 meeting of the Melvern City Council, during which the council considered a purchase recommended by newly hired part-time police officer Ted Craig.

Craig’s first day as a Melvern police officer was Halloween, having been hired following the termination of former Melvern City Marshal Marlin Orear in October. The city had offered the position to any interested area sheriff’s deputies.

Craig attended the meeting to discuss purchasing a secure locker to store property not necessary to be kept at the county sheriff’s office.

The locker would serve the purpose to “not burden the sheriff with minor evidence,” Craig said.

The council authorized purchase of the locker, with the cost not to exceed $250. Another police matter discussed was the police duty schedule.

The council praised Craig for the work he has done since being hired.

During Monday’s meeting, the council also approved the minutes of a special meeting held Dec. 17 to discuss return of city property in possession of Orear.

The approval of the locker purchase came after the council reviewed the December treasurer’s report, which pleased at least one council member.

“We actually did pretty good for December,” said councilman Brian Yockey.

In other discussion, following review in executive session, the council approved a four percent wage increase for city employees.

In other business, the council:

• approved paying all unpaid bills.

• was notified by maintenance employee Gary Kitt that the snow plow is hooked up and operational, and has been used to plow snow this winter.

• discussed trash service and noted a resident’s complaint had been handled.

• was told that an electrical outlet has been installed on the top side of building by water plant.

• determined that documents no longer legally required to be kept by the city can be destroyed in an appropriate manner.

• heard that safety meeting sheets have been kept up-to-date pursuant to insurance requirements.

• was notified that the sewer line at the city shop has been inspected.
