Steps taken to improve water reliability

BURLINGAME—Part of Burlingame’s ongoing water system improvement project involves examination of opportunity for increasing reliability of the system.

LaVene Brenden, representative of Bartlett & West, Inc., the engineering firm for the project, outlined two features for Burlingame City Council’s consideration Monday night.

Brenden said the pumping station near state Highway 31 on the northwest side of Osage City presented significant opportunity for increasing system reliability. One improvement involves relocation of a valve on the line carrying treated water into the pumping station. A second improvement involves installation of an electronic monitoring system that would automatically alert the city of Burlingame whenever a major malfunction occurred at the pumping station.

“Together, both features would substantially reduce the chance of an undetected malfunction at the pumping station, similar to the malfunction when a passerby reported that a large amount of water was in the ditch by the pumping station,” Brenden said. “That malfunction resulted in the loss of 400,000 gallons of water.”

After several questions and discussion between council members and Brenden, the council approved a change order providing for both improvements.

In other discussion, the council adopted an ordinance to update the city’s standard traffic laws. The ordinance specifically authorizes operation of micro-utility trucks within the city limits, provides a definition of a micro-utility truck, specifies requirements for operation of such a vehicle and repeals a section of the traffic ordinance.

In other business, the council:

• repealed a previously approved resolution and replaced it with an ordinance to allow the city to enact the voter-approved one percent sales tax increase.

• approved the bid by Kartsonis Pool & Aquatic Service for winterizing the swimming pool.

• directed auditor Stephen Connell to make appropriate corrections to the budget review.

• approved posting notice of a vacancy for a part-time clerk in city hall.

• approved a Christmas bonus for all employees (except library staff), providing $125 for each full-time employee, $75 for each part-time employee and $125 for a volunteer who, for the year, has provided more than 250 volunteer hours of service to the police department.

• to facilitate year-end closing, scheduled a special meeting for 5 p.m. Dec. 29.
