Lyndon woman arrested in pickup theft

A Lyndon woman has been arrested for the theft of a pickup Sunday morning from a field near U.S. Highway 75 north of Lyndon.

After the vehicle was recovered in Topeka, Gloria Vanwinkle, 49, of Lyndon, was booked into the Osage County Jail on complaints of felony theft and possession of stolen property.

Osage County Sheriff Laurie Dunn said the 2007 Chevy Silverado was reported stolen at 10:57 a.m. from near 217th Street and U.S. 75. The pickup’s driver was reportedly working in a nearby field.

“A witness saw a person get into it, and called us,” Dunn said.

The sheriff’s office issued an alert to area law enforcement, and within an hour, the vehicle was spotted by Shawnee County law enforcement near 49th Street and Topeka Boulevard.

After stopping the truck, officers arrested Vanwinkle. Osage County deputies transported her to jail where she remained as of Tuesday morning.

Dunn said Vanwinkle had been seen by a deputy earlier in the day walking along U.S. 75; shortly afterwards, the pickup was taken.

The vehicle was not damaged in the incident and was returned to the owner.
