from Tuesday's primary election
Tuesday’s primary election process suffered only from “little
clicks and hiccups” according to Osage County Clerk Rhonda
Beets, also the county’s election officer.
Electronic voting machines across the county worked well, she
said, except for a machine in Osage City that would not accept
ballots. Two other machines suffered from operator error –
precinct workers could not turn on one machine, another had its
ink cartridge improperly installed – but those problems
were hastily cured.
“You want everything to work without any problems,”
Beets said early Tuesday morning as the election got underway.
With the final tally completed around 1 a.m. Wednesday morning,
several primary races decided candidates for the November general
election.
On the Republican ballot, voters decided whose name will appear
on the ballot in November for county sheriff, as incumbent Laurie
Dunn won by defeating Robert Gregory. A total of 1,958 residents
cast their ballot in that race.
For Osage County Commission District 2, James Foster edged out
his competitor, Jim Gates by 16 votes to win a spot on the Nov.
ballot as Democrat candidate. He will face Michael Pruitt, Republican.
In the Osage County Commission District 3 race, Kenneth Kuykendall
will represent the Republicans, after receiving the most votes
over opponents Jim Burkett and Joy Croucher.
Jim Slattery, candidate for United States senator, beat his opponent,
Lee Jones, by more than 35,000 votes and will face off against
incumbent Pat Roberts in November.
In the race for U.S. Representative 2nd District, Lynn Jenkins
won 32,240 over Jim Ryan’s 31,203 votes. Jenkins will face
incumbent Nancy Boyda in the general election.
Robert Meissner beat Alan Detrich, 14,908 to 4,713 and will represent
the Republicans in the race for 4th District Board of Education.
“We got it done and we got it right,” Beets said early
Wednesday morning after the final counts had been submitted to
the state. Commissioners will begin the process of canvassing
votes 8:30 a.m. Friday.
