Resurfacing work begins on U.S. 75

Work began Monday on a resurfacing project on U.S. Highway 75 from the state Highway 268 interchange north of Lyndon to Southwest Topeka Boulevard interchange in Shawnee County.

Resurfacing work will take place daily, Monday through Friday, during daylight hours, with occasional Saturday work. The project will smooth the road and fill cracks that can shorten pavement life.

Traffic will be directed through the two-lane section of U.S. 75 from Highway 268 to the two-lane/four-lane split just south of U.S. Highway 56 via pilot car and flagger operations. Traffic will be directed through the four-lane section of the U.S. 75 project via lane closures. Drivers may encounter minor delays of up to 10 minutes on the two-lane section of U.S. 75 with little to no delays on the four-lane section. There will be 12-foot width lane restrictions through the entire project work zone.

Crews will first patch broken or damaged pavement areas. In late August, workers will then begin the resurfacing work. The top two inches of pavement will be milled away then a two-inch asphalt overlay will be applied, using some of the material recycled from the milling process.

Once the recycle step is complete, workers will apply a layer of asphalt over special asphalt “glue” that binds the new asphalt overlay to the old pavement. This type of overlay promotes drainage, reducing hydroplaning, wet weather spray, and skidding. New pavement markings will be applied to the entire resurfaced portion of U.S. 75.

The Kansas Department of Transportation is urging all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
