A Carbondale man was arrested July 21 after an anonymous tip led
police to a suspected methamphetamine lab at 627 Lakin St., in Osage
City.
Osage City Police Chief Fred Nech said the tipster observed suspicious
activity at the home and called police. Nech said several people
were at the residence, but the investigation resulted in the arrest
of only one person, Tanner M. Lira, 18. According to court documents,
Lira is a Carbondale resident.
Lira was formally charged in Osage District Court on July 23 with
three felony counts – manufacturing methamphetamine, conspiracy
to manufacture methamphetamine, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The complaint filed by Osage County Attorney Brandon Jones alleges
that Lira and two others conspired to manufacture methamphetamine
by driving to a home in the county to obtain items, then driving
to Topeka to purchase cold medicine from Walgreens, eventually returning
to Osage City to complete the manufacturing process. The court document
says that approximately one gram of methamphetamine was produced
and consumed.
Nech said a portion of a methamphetamine lab was discovered at the
residence.
“The complete lab was not there,” Nech said last Thursday.
“We’re still looking for part of it.” He said
the lab was contained and did not require a haz-mat cleanup.
The police chief said the investigation continues and more arrests
could result from the activity. “Other people were involved
with this lab,” he said.
As of Tuesday, Lira remained in the Osage County Jail on $50,000
bond. During Lira’s initial appearance, Kathleen Neff was
appointed as his attorney.
If convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine, Lira faces a minimum
of 138 months in prison and a fine up to $500,000. |
