Jewell Jasper Huckaby Jr.

March 27, 1928 – July 16, 2017

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Jewell Huckaby, of Highland’s Ranch, Colo., Evergreen, Colo., Osage City, Robinson, and Nevada, Mo., passed peacefully into the arms of God July 16, 2017, at Mill Vista Lodge at Wind Crest Retirement Community, Highlands Ranch, Colo. He was 89.

Leland Asbury York

Aug. 26, 1926 – July 20, 2017

LOUISBURG — Leland Asbury York, Louisburg, died July 20, 2017, peacefully at Louisburg Care Center, Louisburg. He was 90.

He was born Aug. 26, 1926, at New Hampton, Mo., the son of Francis Asbury and Clara Helen Cover York. He was the middle child with three brothers, Charles, Neal and Robert and a sister Avalon.

He married the love of his life, Peggy Lou Hainline on June 12, 1949. They shared 62 wonderful years before her passing in 2011.

James Arthur Hamman

Jan. 12, 1941 – July 19, 2017

OSAGE CITY — James Arthur Hamman died Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at his home. He was 76.

He was born Jan. 12, 1941, at Emporia, the son of Marion Hamman and Bernice Jones Winter. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Emporia.

He served in the National Guard and worked for Santa Fe Railroad on the telegraph and switchboard for many years until his retirement in 1992.

He married Eda Van Horn Aug. 7, 1971, at Emporia. They would later divorce.

Robert Glynn Protheroe

Oct. 4, 1943 – July 20, 2017

EMPORIA — Robert Glynn “Swede” Protheroe died Thursday, July 20, 2017, at his home in Emporia. He was 73.

He was born Oct. 4, 1943, at Emporia, the son of Glynn D. and Evea L. Keller Protheroe. He attended Reading High School and graduated with the class of 1961. He would further his education at Clarks Business College and Kansas State Teachers College.

Motorcycle troupe supports veterans

OSAGE CITY — The families of fallen servicemen can expect to be comforted by droves of motorcyclists ride into the graveyard representing the red, white and blue to honor the service of their loved one.
The American Legion Riders (ALR) discussed their organization and goals July 11 at the Jersey Creek Club meeting in the Osage City Library. Only three riders were expected to arrive for the presentation however, twice as many showed up.

Warren Lee Wideman

July 26, 1948 – July 16, 2017

TOPEKA — Warren Lee Wideman, Carbondale, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 68.

He was born on July 26, 1948, at Emporia, the son of August and Alberta Lee Wideman. He grew up on a farm outside Olpe.

He attended Maydale Catholic School and the public schools in Olpe. He graduated from Olpe High School in 1966. After a few years, he moved to Topeka where he met his future wife.

He married Pamela Ferry Feb. 3, 1975, at Topeka. She survives.

James Kent Rittenhouse

Aug. 1, 1942 – July 15, 2017

OSAGE CITY — James Kent Rittenhouse, Hanston, died July 15, 2017, at Osage City. He was 74.

He was born Aug. 1, 1942, at Great Bend, the son of N. James and Grace McNabney Rittenhouse. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Hanston, and graduated from Hanston High School in 1960, before attending college at Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University.
