Area teams struggle at Lyndon tourney

LYNDON—Osage County representatives struggled through the Lyndon Invitational Sept. 12, going winless in pool play against other teams.

The county’s only win came at the end of pool play, when Marais des Cygnes Valley beat the host Lady Tigers 25-11, 25-21. Sara Flewelling led the Lady Trojans with 4 attacks and 2 blocks.

MdCV preceded the win with a 25-10, 25-11 loss to Lebo and a 25-13, 22-25, 25-23 loss to Jackson Heights.

Bearcats earn break-out win against Trojans

BURLINGAME—Burlingame (2-0) came storming out of the game with 48 points in the first half, en route to a 62-14 thumping of Marais des Cygnes Valley (1-1).

“That was a big win for our program,” said Jeff Slater, Burlingame head coach. “I’m very pleased with our execution in all three phases of the game.”

Hutchins found the end zone with ease, earning six touchdowns, five of which came on the ground. He scored from all over the field, with three of his touchdowns coming inside the 10-yard line.

Lyndon ranked 10th in Class 2A volleyball

The Kansas Volleyball Association has released its preseason rankings, which include Lyndon High School at the 10th ranked team in Class 2A.

2015 Fall Sports Preview

The Osage County Herald-Chronicle's Fall Sports Preview was published Thursday, Aug. 27 in the print and online editions. Area cyclists begin cross-country trek

David Saving, Lenexa, and Scott Averill, Overbrook, both 60 years of age and long-time friends, began biking across the United States today. They are achieving this bucket list challenge by riding their bikes over 3,500 miles across 12 states to raise awareness and funding for children’s education in 29 countries.

LeadaChild, a 501(c)(3) organization, has served to provide education for children for over 47 years. Saving and Averill will be departing Portland, Ore., and ride across the United States to Portland, Maine.

SFTHS to host alumni football game Saturday

CARBONDALE—Santa Fe Trail High School will host an alumni football game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Santa Fe Trail High School.

“We have a home-and-home (trade out), so this year it’s at our place,” said SFT Coach Jayson Duncan. “Last year it was a good money maker for both teams. We’re hoping a lot of people come out and support us, watch a good football game and help support us. We’re looing forward to it.”

Courtwright to play in Blue-Grey Super Combine

Santa Fe Trail’s Daniel Courtwright has been selected to attend the Blue-Grey Southwest Super Combine at AT&T Stadium June 27-28 in Arlington, Texas.

Courtwright qualified for the prestigious national invitation as a receiver/cornerback as a result of his performance at a regional combine last April in Kansas City. He had the top weightlifting performance of 55 receivers in the two-day event.

KSHSAA changes girls cross country distance

TOPEKA—The Kansas State High School Activities Association has officially increase the girls’ cross country state distance from four to five kilometers, matching the boy’s distance and the competitive distance at the college level.

“In recent years there has been ongoing discussion regarding a potential change in distance for KSHSAA high school girls cross country,” said a news release from the organization.

KSHAA cited surveys from coaches and athletics directors, as well as a letter from the U.S. Office of Civil Rights, in making the decision.
