County teams wrap up postseason runs

Osage County’s three remaining playoff football teams each reached the ends of their seasons tonight, coming up short in sectionals and sub-state games.

Bearcats undefeated season ends

BURLINGAME—The Burlingame Bearcats rolled into the home sub-state with an 11-0 record, hosting undefeated Hanover for a chance to play in the state championship. The Bearcats trailed by a touchdown early, and played catchup throughout the match.

Bearcats win shootout over Central Raiders

BURDEN—The Burlingame Bearcats broke through the second round of the Eight Man Division I playoffs with a 74-54 win over the Central High School Raiders Saturday evening at Burden.

“I knew, offensively, we were going to be able to score,” said Jeff Slater, Burlingame head coach. “They’ve won shootouts all year.”

The two teams combined for 18 touchdowns and just under 1,000 yards of total offense. Burlingame led the battle with 11 trips into the end zone.

Tigers reverse early loss to advance

ESKRIDGE—The Lyndon Tigers reversed a second-week loss in the first round of the postseason, clearing Mission Valley in a 48-32 battle Friday in Eskridge.

“It felt good,” said Brent Hoelting, Lyndon head football coach. “I was really happy for our kids.”

The two teams entered the postseason with seven wins apiece, but Lyndon showed up in top form. The Tigers overturned a 26-20 loss from Sept. 11 with a dominating first half, outpacing the Vikings 35-14.

Late interceptions recharge Santa Fe Trail

Chargers advance to rematch with Columbus

CARBONDALE—The Santa Fe Trail Chargers made two big defensive plays that rolled into two late touchdowns to turn a deficit into a huge 35-22 win over Jefferson West Friday at home.

“It was a heck of a game,” said Jayson Duncan, Santa Fe Trail head coach. “We jumped out early and they scored right before the half.”

The Chargers scored early on a 59-yard pass from Bryce Erickson to Daniel Courtwright, and added short touchdown runs by Peyton Newton and Trevor Boudeman to carry a 20-16 lead out of the first half.

HS FOOTBALL: Chargers knock off Osawatomie

CARBONDALE—The Santa Fe Trail Chargers wrapped up their regular season by sacking the team with the second-best record in Class 4A Division II, and it wasn’t even close.

The Chargers 40-21 win over Osawatomie clinched the district championship for Santa Fe Trail, which will return to the postseason this week.

“It was a huge win for us,” said Jayson Duncan, SFT head coach. “I thought we played our best game, and we have been playing really good football towards the end of the season.”
