Indians state tourney begins with Wellsville

COUNCIL GROVE—The Osage City Indians wrapped up sub-state play with a 61-51 win over Rossville in the championship game Saturday night.

Osage City accepted the award with limited emotion – the top-ranked Indians did what was expected of them all year.

Chargers take sixth at state wrestling

SALINA—The Santa Fe Trail Chargers competed in the Class 4A State Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday at Bicentennial Center in Salina. The team took a near record number of wrestlers to the meet, returning with four medals and a top team finish.

“I am pleased with the sixth place finish out of the 64 Class 4A teams,” said Regan Erickson, SFT head wrestling coach.

“Before the tournament, I had high hopes of being in the top three,” Erickson said. “Friday night I was just hoping for another medalist or two.”

Lady Bearcats fall in sub-state

\MADISON—The Burlingame Lady Bearcats concluded their season with a 63-39 loss to Madison in the first round of sub-state play Monday in Madison.

The Lady Bearcats took an early lead, and held onto a 22-21 edge at the half. Madison returned in the final quarters with a 42-17 run to advance to the sub-state semifinals. Hannah Young led the Lady Bearcats’ effort with 10 points.

The Lady Bearcats preceded sub-state with a 48-40 loss to Heritage Academy Feb. 26 in Burlingame. Ali Vandevord and Young each had 12 points.

The losses end Burlingame’s season at 3-18.

Chargers win De Soto regional title

DE SOTO—The Santa Fe Trail Chargers dominated the Class 4A Regional Wrestling Tournament Feb. 19-20 at De Soto. The Chargers took first place with 180.5 team points, qualifying eight wrestlers for the Class 4A State Tournament Friday and Saturday in Salina.

“We did set a school record by putting eight in finals,” said Regan Erickson, coach.

Eight is also the most qualifiers the school has placed since sending nine wrestlers to state in 2003.

Bearcats qualify two for state wrestling

ROSSVILLE—The Burlingame Bearcats finished with two state qualifiers from the Class 3-2-1A Regional at Rossville last weekend.

Austin Jones (29-9) led the Bearcats, placing third at 182 pounds, and Paul Holt (24-7) slipped in with a fourth-place finish at 182 pounds.

“I think Austin is peaking at the right time,” Bingham said. “He is a prolific at pinning his opponents, with 21 of his 29 wins coming by fall.

Indians hold off Tigers' best effort

Osage City claims tournament, league titles in 59-46 win

EMPORIA—The Class 3A No. 1 ranked Osage City Indians have worn the bulls eye proudly so far this year, taking shots from league and area opponents.

It’s not surprising that some of the best ones came from league and county rivals, Lyndon, who led the Indians for more than half of Saturday night’s Flint Hills League championship game at White Auditorium, in Emporia.

Holt selected for 2016 Shrine Bowl

BURLINGAME—Burlingame High School senior Paul Holt was recently announced as one of the selections to the Kansas Shrine Bowl.

“I am extremely happy for Paul and our football program,” said Jeff Slater, Burlingame head football coach. “Paul’s individual performance this year was outstanding and our team’s effort to make it to the state semifinals certainly helped Paul achieve this honor.”

Holt’s selection tops an assortment of honors, including unanimous First Team All-Lyon County League, First Team All-Class 3A, and First Team All-Osage County.
