Richard Gene Peterson

SHAWNEE MISSION— Richard “Dick” Gene Peterson died Jan. 17, 2014, at a Shawnee Mission nursing home. He was 63.

He was born March 6, 1950, at Burke, S.D., the son of Gerald and Dorothy Ady Peterson. He graduated from DeSmet High School, S.D., and attended Watertown, S.D. vocational technical school were he graduated from auto mechanics.

Robert Howard Bethell

June. 30, 1931 – Jan. 25, 2014

OVERBROOK—Robert Howard “Bob” Bethell, Pomona, died Jan. 25, 2014, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. He was 82.

He was born June 30, 1931, at Pomona, the son of Ralph and Callie Grimes Bethell. He graduated from Pomona High School with the class of 1949.

He was a near lifelong resident of Pomona, living also in Ottawa and Baldwin City.

Lorena G. Gifford

Jan. 28, 1919 – Jan. 19, 2014

COUNCIL GROVE—Lorena G. Gifford, Council Grove, formerly of Burlingame, died Jan. 19, 2014, at a Council Grove nursing center. She was 94.

She was born Jan. 28, 1919, at Burlingame, the daughter of Orville Smith and Elizabeth Catherine Murray Maple. She attended Burlingame schools.

She worked as an operator for Burlingame Telephone Company for several years. She retired from the State of Kansas after 17 years of service.

Garry R. McPherson

Died Jan. 17, 2014

OVERBROOK—Garry R. McPherson, 65, of Overbrook, passed away Jan. 17, 2014, in a Topeka hospital surrounded by family. Garry was born in 1948 to Denzel and Carmel McPherson in Topeka.

He was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, Laurence, of Carbondale. He is survived by his sister Donna Teehee, of Oskaloosa; brother Ronnie McPherson, of Newman; and six children, Virgilene Hildebrandt, Kelly McPherson, Darrell McPherson, Raymond McPherson, Misty Brown and Matthew McPherson.

Helen L. Peimann

July 4, 1921 – Jan. 19, 2014

EDWARDSVILLE—Helen L. Peimann, Vassar, died Jan. 19, 2014, at an Edwardsville nursing home. She was 92.

She was born July 4, 1921, in Brown County, the daughter of Edwin and Edith Schumann Meyer. She lived most of her life around the Vassar community and lived in Harveyville and Burlingame before moving to Edwardsville three years ago.

She graduated from Powhattan High School in 1939. She was a homemaker and farm wife. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Vassar, where she was also a part of the Daughter’s of Zion.

Thomas George Skidmore

Dec. 23, 1943 – Jan. 17, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Thomas George Skidmore, Osage City, died Jan. 17, 2014, at Osage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 71.

He was born Dec. 23, 1943, at Lyndon, the son of Milton and Gertrude Skidmore. He graduated from Lyndon High School. He lived and worked in Osage City most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Georgia Mitchum; and a brother, John Robert Skidmore.

Betty Jean Rice

Jan. 17, 2014

EMPORIA—Betty Jean Rice, Emporia, died Jan. 17, 2014, at Sterling House, Emporia. She was 91.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Emporia. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona.

Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, assisted the family.

Irl Jacob George

July 7, 1934 – Jan. 14, 2014

CARBONDALE—Commander Irl Jacob George, 79, of Carbondale, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014.

Irl was born July 7, 1934 in Colony, KS, the son of Russell and Marjorie Compton George. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and from USD 450, having served as both a teacher and administrator. He was proud of his years of Naval Service and loved the years he spent in education.

Irl was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially loved duck hunting with his brother, Jim. He was also a competitive game player.

Wendell Seastrom

Sept. 15, 1920 – Jan. 10, 2014

SILVERTON, Ore.—Wendell Seastrom, 93, of Silverton, Ore., died Jan. 10, 2014, at Davenport House.

He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Burlingame, to Olian and Laura Seastrom, the second of three sons.

He lived and worked on the family farm in eastern Kansas before joining the Navy during World War II. Upon leaving the Navy, he moved to Oregon. He worked as a surveyor on the construction of the Detroit Dam.

Marjorie Dale Day

March 3, 1950 – Jan. 11, 2014

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho—Marjorie Dale Day, 64, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, passed away on Jan. 11, 2014, after an extended illness.
