Evelyn Lucille Lawhorn

Oct. 29, 1937 – June 29, 2014

TOPEKA—Evelyn Lucille Lawhorn, Melvern, died June 29, 2014, at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. She was 76.

She was born on Oct. 29, 1937, on the family farm near Lyndon, the daughter of Charles and Esther Odor Lininger. She lived most of her life in or near the Melvern community.

She graduated from Melvern High School in 1955. She worked for Capper’s Weekly, Hallmark Cards, Jostens and was a homemaker. She attended the Melvern United Methodist Church and the True Grace Community Church.

Nelden Dale Cain

Aug. 17, 1958 – June 27, 2014

TOPEKA—Nelden Dale Cain, Osage City, died June 27, 2014, at Stormont-Vail HealthCare, Topeka. He was 55.

He was born Aug. 17, 1958, at Holton, the son of Stella Holler and John Cain Sr. He lived in Topeka, Lyndon and Vassar before moving to Osage City two years ago.

He graduated from Seaman High School. He worked for Brad Ragan Tire, Topeka, and had been a floor covering installer for Marv’s and Feltner Floors and Furniture, Lyndon, for many years. He was a member of Lyndon Baptist Church and then Flint Hills Baptist Church, Osage City.

James E. Briggs

July 28, 1958 – June 27, 2014

LAWRENCE—James E. Briggs, Lawrence, died June 20, 2014, of complications from over 50 years of diabetes. He was 55.

He was born July 28, 1958, at Topeka, the son of Dean E. and Lyla Rae Leishman Briggs. He graduated from Santa Fe Trail High School in 1976.

He married Donna Duncan in 1980. They later divorced.

Mary E. Evans

March 11, 1915 – June 18, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Mary E. Evans, Osage City, died June 18, 2014, at Osage City Nursing Center, Osage City. She was 99.

She was born March 11, 1915, south of Burlingame, the daughter of Anna Agnes Gray and Richard Williams. She moved to Barclay community in 1919 and attended Barclay Rural School and graduated from Barclay High School in 1932.

She married Claude Evans Feb. 9, 1936, at Osage City. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1980.

Raymond Chauncey Stevens

Aug. 12, 1931 – June 13, 2014

SPRING HILL—Raymond “Arch” Chauncey Stevens, Spring Hill, formerly of Gardner, ascended to heaven June 13, 2014. He was 82.

He was born Aug. 12, 1931, at San Diego, Calif., the son of Abram and Flossie Mae Canon Stevens. Due to his dad’s naval service, he lived in Panama Canal Zone, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Carolina, New York and California.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict.

He married Beverly Carol McCoy May 29, 1954, at Moran. She preceded him in death in 2008.

Martha Issinghoff

July 30, 1925 – June 14, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Martha Issinghoff died June 14, 2014. She was 88.

She was born July 30, 1925, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Hays, the daughter of Anton and Anna Sauer Stremel. She received her primary education at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Loretto, Rush County, and graduated from Windthorst High School, Windthorst.

She married Linus Clinton Issinghoff Jan. 28, 1947, at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Windthorst. He preceded her in death.

Frank E. Prost

Feb. 23, 1934 – June 13, 2014

OVERBROOK—Frank E. Prost, Carbondale, died June 13, 2014, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. He was 80.

He was born Feb. 23, 1934, at Osage City, the son of Frank and Alvera Woolery Prost. He grew up in Osage City, and lived in Topeka, then near Carbondale for the last 41 years.

Elmer Earl Lindell

Jan. 23, 1922 – June 13, 2014

LAWRENCE—Elmer Earl Lindell, Lawrence, died June 13, 2014, at his home after fighting a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 92.

He was born Jan. 23, 1922, at Lone Star, the son of August and Mattie Lutz Lindell. After graduating from Liberty Memorial High School in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served at Leyte Island and Okinawa during World War II.

Ruth Ann Gruver

Aug. 20, 1943 — June 12, 2014

TOPEKA—Ruth Ann Gruver, 70, Centropolis, died June 12, 2014, at Stormont-Vail HealthCare.

She was born Aug. 20, 1943 at Richland, the daughter of Hyluard and Chrystyne (Benander) Maichel.

She is survived by her husband, Calvin Gruver of the home; a daughter, Michelle Brown and husband, Rob, Overbrook; a son, Bob Gruver and wife, Lori, Centropolis; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Nelson Young, Sandra Simmons, Wayne Maichel, Bonnie Keim and Carl Maichel.

John Louis Smith

Oct. 25, 1996 – June 9, 2014

TREG COUNTY—John Louis “Bubba” Smith, Ottawa, died June 9, 2014, in Trego County. He was 17.

He was born Oct. 25, 1996, at Ottawa, the son of John Smith and Veronica Lawrence Powell. He grew up in Osage City moving to Ottawa in 2012. He was a junior at Ottawa High School.

He worked as a handyman for Main Street Antiques, for the past year and a half, and also as an auto detailer for Ottawa Chrysler.
