Adelia Jane Barbee Huston

March 3, 1915 ¬– March 22, 2014

OVERBROOK—Adelia Jane Barbee Huston, Overbrook, died March 22, 2014, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 99.

She was born March 3, 1915, at Twin Mound, the daughter of Jacob and Mabel Montfoort.

She was employed at Supply Depot during the 1940’s. She had worked at the Neese Mercantile, Richland, for approximately 20 years. She moved to Topeka in 1960, and began working for Sears as a cashier in the credit department until she retired. She was a member of the Quivira Heights Church of Christ.

Elsie M. Rukes

Nov. 13, 1924 – March 23, 2014

TOPEKA—Elsie M. Rukes, Topeka, died March 23, 2014, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. She was 89.

She was born Nov. 13, 1924, at Lyndon, the daughter of Earl and Erma Frazier Mickelson. She graduated from Lyndon High School.

She was employed by the state of Kansas for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of Al-Anon for over 40 years.

She married Jack Rukes, Dec. 24, 1945, at Overbrook. He preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 1999.

Ronald W. Dean Sr.

March 21, 2014

CARBONDALE—Ronald W. Dean Sr., Carbondale, died March 21, 2014. He was 62.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. March 28 at Crossroads Community Church, Scranton.

Eileen K. Schroeder

Aug. 27, 1930 – March 19, 2014

OSAGE CITY—Eileen K. Schroeder, Osage City, died March 19, 2014. She was 83.

She was born Aug. 27, 1930, on a farm near Trenton, Neb., the daughter of Michael and Frances Keeney. Her father died when she was 13 years old. As a result, she was largely responsible for the continued operation of the family farm, with the assistance of her older brother.

James L. Buchholz

Jan. 8, 1933 – March 17, 2014

OVERBROOK—James L “Jim” Buchholz died March 17, 2014, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. He was 81.

He was born Jan. 8, 1933, at Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Clarence V. and Anna M. Schultz Buchholz. He was raised in Wadena, Minn., and graduated from Wadena High School in 1951.

After graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1955. In 1956, he went to work for the United States Postal Office in Topeka and retired as postmaster of the Carbondale office in 1988.

Ronald G. Farwell

May 27, 1935 – March 17, 2014

OTTAWA—Ronald G. Farwell, Ottawa, died March 17, 2014, at his home in Ottawa. He was 78.

He was born May 27, 1935, at Peoria, Ill., the son of Robert and Marion Leas Farwell. He grew up in Peoria, graduating from Central High in 1953. He then joined the Air Force on Jan. 12, 1954. They moved to Lyndon in 1970, and have been in Ottawa for the last 33 years.

He married Leitha M. Light Jan. 22, 1955, at Peoria, Illinois. She survives of the home.

Donna Zehner

Sept. 23, 1942 – March 14, 2013

TOPEKA—Donna Zehner, Osage City, died March 14, 2014, at a Topeka hospital. She was 71.

She was born Sept. 23, 1942, at Osage City, the daughter of Charles and Sylvia Hasty Heider. She attended and graduated from Osage City High School with the class of 1960.

She lived most of her life in Osage City and worked for 13 years at Osage Grain. She later worked and retired from Kan Build, Osage City.

She married Frank Zehner in 1962 at Topeka. They later divorced.

Jeffrey Martin McFarlane

April 25, 1956 – March 14, 2014

BURLINGAME—Jeffrey Martin McFarlane, Burlingame, died March 14, 2014. He was 57.

He was born April 25, 1956, at Emporia, the son of Joseph W. and Bessie Meyers McFarlane. He attended school in Burlingame, graduating from Burlingame High School in 1974.

He was a member of the 1972 state championship football team, played basketball at Independence Junior College, and later attended Emporia State University where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

Lillian May Smith

Dec. 19, 1936 – March 11, 2014

OVERBROOK—Lillian May Smith, Overbrook, died March 11, 2014. She was 77.

She was born Dec. 19, 1936, at Leavenworth, the daughter of Elza and Effie Fowler Rudolph. She was raised in Leavenworth.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who also worked as a nursing aide and in the food service industry. She enjoyed coloring, word searches and being a jokester.

She married Clyde Edward Smith June 11, 1956, at Leavenworth. He preceded her in death.

Lucile Cummings

Dec. 7, 1915 – March 11, 2014

WELLSVILLE—Lucile Cummings, Ottawa, died March 11, 2014, at Wellsville Retirement Community. She was 98.

She was born Dec. 7, 1915, at Melvern, the daughter of Terry and Verlie Boyd Rich. She had lived in Lyndon, Pomona, and Ottawa.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Kansas in 1938. She taught junior high school English at Melvern, Lyndon, and Ottawa for many years.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, AU Chapter P.E.O. at Ottawa and had attended the Presbyterian church.
