Thomas George Skidmore

OSAGE CITY—Thomas George Skidmore, Osage City, died Jan. 17, 2014, at Osage Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 71.

He was born Dec. 23, 1943, at Lyndon, the son of Milton and Gertrude Skidmore. He graduated from Lyndon High School. He lived and worked in Osage City most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Georgia Mitchum; and a brother, John Robert Skidmore.

Betty Jean Rice

Jan. 17, 2014

EMPORIA—Betty Jean Rice, Emporia, died Jan. 17, 2014, at Sterling House, Emporia. She was 91.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Jan. 20 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Emporia. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pomona.

Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, assisted the family.

Irl Jacob George

July 7, 1934 – Jan. 14, 2014

CARBONDALE—Commander Irl Jacob George, 79, of Carbondale, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014.

Irl was born July 7, 1934 in Colony, KS, the son of Russell and Marjorie Compton George. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and from USD 450, having served as both a teacher and administrator. He was proud of his years of Naval Service and loved the years he spent in education.

Irl was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially loved duck hunting with his brother, Jim. He was also a competitive game player.

Wendell Seastrom

Sept. 15, 1920 – Jan. 10, 2014

SILVERTON, Ore.—Wendell Seastrom, 93, of Silverton, Ore., died Jan. 10, 2014, at Davenport House.

He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Burlingame, to Olian and Laura Seastrom, the second of three sons.

He lived and worked on the family farm in eastern Kansas before joining the Navy during World War II. Upon leaving the Navy, he moved to Oregon. He worked as a surveyor on the construction of the Detroit Dam.

Marjorie Dale Day

March 3, 1950 – Jan. 11, 2014

BONNERS FERRY, Idaho—Marjorie Dale Day, 64, of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, passed away on Jan. 11, 2014, after an extended illness.

Kenneth E. Huston

Jan. 23, 2915 – Jan. 10, 2014

OVERBROOK—Kenneth Earl “Kenny” Huston, 88, of Overbrook, died Jan. 10, 2014, at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook. He was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Franklin County, the son of Earl M. Huston and Zetha (Wray) Huston.

After attending Appanoose High School, Kenny, known to be a “fixer to a fine art” was a self-employed man of many talents. He worked as a farmer southeast of Overbrook, as well as an electrician, plumber and handyman. He was a member of the Washington Creek Church of the Brethren.

Nicholas Thompson

Aug. 21, 1998 – Jan. 11, 2014

TOPEKA—Nicholas "Lil' Nick" Thompson, 15, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Topeka. He was born on August 21, 1998 in Topeka.

Nick had lived in Topeka and Lyndon most of his life. He was a freshman at Topeka West High School.

Nick was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Cox, and a step sister, Michelle Perkins.

Lee Dodson

April 20, 1924 – Dec. 21, 2013

TOPEKA—Lee Dodson, 89, Topeka, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, December 21st, with his family by his side.

Lee was born on April 20, 1924, to Stokes and Beulah Emerson Dodson on a farm north of Carbondale. He grew up until age 7 in Carbondale, Richland and Scranton before moving to Topeka where he graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education with a major in History. He later earned both a Masters and Doctorate Degree from the University of Kansas.

Diana Lynn Foiles

July 3, 1961 – Jan. 5, 2014

Lyndon—Diana Lynn Foiles, 52, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at her home in Lyndon. She was born on July 3, 1961, in Sedan.

Diana grew up in Grenola and had lived in Emporia and Winfield before moving to Lyndon in 2001.

She graduated from Central Burden High School in 1979 and attended Southwestern College at Winfield and Labette Community College. She was a Zone Manager at the Wal-Mart Store in Ottawa. She was a member of the Lyndon United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and helped with the Methodist Youth Group.

Francis Tyrell

June 8, 1923 – Jan. 6, 2014

TOPEKA—Francis “Fritz” Tyrell, formerly of Lyndon, died Jan. 6, 2014, at a Topeka hospital. He was 90.

He was born June 8, 1923, at Talmage, the son of Benjamin and Margaret Curran Tyrell.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 1944. He served in the European Theater during World War II and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. After his discharge, he worked at Wissin Motor Company in Abilene as an auto mechanic and later owned and operated Wakefield Marina on Milford Lake.
