Patricia Ann Peterson

OSAGE CITY — Patricia Ann Peterson entered Heaven’s gates on Oct. 8, 2017. She was 81.

She was born was born Oct. 14, 1935 at Kansas City. Her top priority in life was loving and caring for her family.

She was an excellent homemaker and cook. She loved flower gardening and canning the goods from the homestead fruit trees and large vegetable garden. She also enjoyed reading and needle work. She was a caregiver to so many people in her life and was an intellect and an artist.

Iona Lorraine Smiley

Aug. 8, 1926 – Oct. 3, 2017

OSAGE CITY- Iona Lorraine Smiley, Osage City, died Oct. 3, 2017, at Osage Nursing Center, Osage City. He was 91.

She was born Aug. 8, 1926, Dodge City, the daughter of Ross Ray and Lillie Arline Bryan Evarts. She graduated from McPherson High School.

She married James Clifford Smiley Jan. 25, 1947, at Topeka. He preceded her in death.

Mary Marcella Walquist-Brewer

July 3, 1925 – Oct. 6, 2017

SYLVA, N.C. — Mary Marcella Walquist-Brewer, Osage City, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at her home in Sylva, N.C. She was 92.

She was born July 3, 1925, at Marquette, the daughter of Amos Tandy and Julia Margaret Bohall Hall. She graduated from Barclay High School.

She married Lawrence Eugene “Bud” Walquist March 20, 1946, at Lyndon. To this union, two children were born, Anita and Charles. Bud died on Dec. 29, 1981. She married Daniel David Brewer on July 1, 1995, at Osage City. He preceded her in death in 2010.

Maxine Karnes

March 24, 1921 – Oct. 4, 2017

TOPEKA — Maxine Karnes, Overbrook, died Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka, Kansas. She was 96.

She was born March 21, 1921, on the family farm east of Overbrook, the daughter of John and Bertha Howard Desque. She lived all of her life around Overbrook until 1991 when she moved into town.

Reta Mae Riggin

Nov. 25, 1933 – Oct. 4 2017

TOPEKA — Reta Mae Riggin, Harveyville, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at a Topeka hospital. She was 83.

She was born Nov. 25, 1933, at Harveyville, the daughter of Robert Melvin and Esther Louise Romine Chatham. She graduated from Burlingame High School in 1952.

She worked for Harveyville Grade School in the 1990s. She was a member of Burlingame Federated Church and Harveyville United Methodist Church. She was a faithful mother and farm wife.

Mildred R. Romine

Dec. 14, 1924 – Oct. 2, 2017

EMPORIA — Mildred R. Romine, Emporia died Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, at Emporia Presbyterian Manor. She was 92.

She was born Dec. 14, 1924, in rural Lyon County, the daughter of Howard A. and Leona Finnell Rees.

She married Dean L. Romine April 30, 1943, at Emporia. He died Oct. 29, 1986, at Emporia.

She was a homemaker, rancher, jeweler and owner of the Gold Nugget in Emporia.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Barry Dean Romine; and a sister, Imogene Wolvington.

Dorothy Fillmore

Nov. 10, 1927 – Sept. 27, 2017

OLATHE —Dorothy Nadine Croucher Fillmore, Colony, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017, at Olathe Hospice House, Olathe. She was 89.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Iola. The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Colony Cemetery, Colony.

Bobby Roberts

May 3, 1945 – Sept. 30, 2017

CARBONDALE — Bobby Roberts, Carbondale, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017, at his home surrounded by family. He was 72.

He was born May 3, 1945, in Osage County, the eighth child of Warren and Vada Coday Roberts.

He held many jobs before going to Hills Pet Food where he remained for over 37 years until he retired.

He married Mary Jean Dawson, June 6, 1964, at her home in Carbondale. She survives of the home.

Louis Anthony DeBarge

Oct. 6, 1958 – Sept. 29, 2017

HOLTON — Louis Anthony “Tony” DeBarge, Holton, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 58.

He was born Oct. 6, 1958, at St. Louis, Mo., the son of Donald Anthony DeBarge and Norma Jean Riley Roberts. He graduated from Holton High School in 1977 and lived most of his life in Holton.

He worked for 30 years at Logan Business Machines in Topeka, only retiring because of his health. He belonged to the Monday Night Guys for more than 20 years.

Dean Gilbert Gardner

Feb. 12, 1926 – Aug. 23, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Dean Gilbert Gardner, life long resident of Osage City, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2017, at Vintage Park of Osage City. He was 91.

He was born Feb. 12, 1926, at Osage City, the son of Jess E. and Cecelia A. Kiwitter Gardner. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had built, owned and operated Dean’s Drive-In and Dean’s Restaurant in Osage City for 37 years.
