Sylvia L. Calkins

Sept. 19, 1929 – Nov. 19, 2016

TOPEKA—Sylvia L. Calkins, Topeka, formerly of Burlingame, died Nov. 19, 2016, at a Topeka nursing home. She was 87.

She was born Sept. 19, 1929, at Burlingame, the daughter of Erwin A. and Hazel E. Dutton Taber. She graduated from Harveyville High School and from Clarks Business School. She worked for Bell Telephone in Topeka.

She married Donald W. Calkins, March 31, 1951, at Burlingame. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1991.

Robert Cameron Christiason

Feb. 17, 1942 – Nov. 19, 2016

LYNDON—Robert “Christy” Cameron Christiason, Lyndon, died Nov. 19, 2016, at his home. He was 74.

He was born Feb. 17, 1942, at home in Barclay, the son of Homer and Lucille Davis Christiason. He graduated from Osage City High School and was a lifelong resident of Barclay and Osage City communities.

He married Dorothy Mae Schoepflin April 3, 1966, at Osage City. She survives.

He worked at DeBaun International and later retired from Meier’s Ready Mix.

Clifford I. Waller

May 30, 1926 – Nov. 16, 2016

TOPEKA—Clifford “Bud” Ivan Waller, Osage City, died Nov. 16, 2016, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka. He was 90.

He was born May 30, 1926, at Mont Ida, the son to Chester and Margaret Irene Manspeaker Waller.

He had worked as a farmer in his younger years and then for Pella Windows in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

He moved to Osage City and married Neta F. Germann. They were together for 20 years until she preceded in death on Oct. 22, 2016.

Mildred Greene

March 17, 1932 ¬– Nov. 17, 2016

OVERBROOK—Mildred Greene, Carbondale, died Nov. 17, 2016, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook. She was 84.

She was born March 17, 1932, at Lyndon, the daughter of Warren and Marilyn Cody Roberts. She grew up between Lyndon and Osage City and lived in Osage City for several years. She lived in Carbondale for the last 53 years.

She was a homemaker and was an owner and operator of Greene Sanitation. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, was a bingo fanatic, auction queen and outstanding mom.

Warren Wallace Tiedtke

April 22, 1924 – Nov. 15, 2016

TEKAMAH, Neb.—Warren Wallace Tiedtke died Nov. 15, 2016, at Tekamah, Neb. He was 92.

He was born April 22, 1924, at Pilger, Neb., the son of Otto and Anna Tritten Tiedtke.

He graduated from Pilger High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard a PC Craft, doing convoy escort, in the north Atlantic during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he returned home and began working in the auto repair trades.

Alvin Lee Jiskra

Aug. 11, 1936 – Nov. 12, 2016

OSAGE CITY—Alvin Lee Jiskra Sr., Lyndon, died Nov. 12, 2016, at Osage Nursing Center, Osage City. He was 80.

He was born Aug. 11, 1936, at Swanton, Neb., the son of Edward and Rose Placek Jiskra. He lived near the Lyndon community for the last 20 years and had lived in Garden Plain before that.

He was a farmer and stockman all of his life. He served in the Air National Guard.

He married Alberta Mae Miller May 23, 1970, at Lincoln, Neb. She preceded him in death on July 24, 2016.

Walter W. Wissman

Jan. 16, 1923 – Nov. 14, 2016

TOPEKA—Walter W. Wissman, Scranton, died Nov. 14, 2016 at Topeka Presbyterian Manor. He was 93.

He was born Jan. 16, 1923, at Rulo, Neb., the son of Charley and Katherine Willich Wissman.

He married Norma Smith Aug. 24, 1944, at Falls City, Neb. She preceded him in death in 1982. He married Carolyn Jennings July 3, 1984, at Topeka. She survives.

He served in the Navy during World War II, stationed in the South Pacific. In 1951, he moved to Emmett, to farm.

Paul E. Lang

April 30, 1925 – Nov. 12, 2016

TOPEKA—Paul E. Lang, Burlingame, died Nov. 12, 2016, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. He was 91.

He was born April 30, 1925, at Tampa, the son of Rudolph Carl and Bertha Weiss Lang. He attended Chapman High School. He was a member of the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946.

He was a farmer and stockman in the Burlingame area for most of his life. He was a founding member of the Burlingame Saddle Club, a member of the Burlingame 4-H, Burlingame school board, American Legion, Fairplain Grange and Burlingame Lion's Club.

Gerald Thornburgh

Dec. 6, 1949 – Nov. 3, 2016

PIEDMONT, Okla.—Gerald “Jerry” Thornburgh died at home Nov. 3, 2016, in Piedmont, Okla. He was 66.

He was born Dec. 6, 1949, at Miami, Okla., the son of Hubert Thornburgh and Beatrice McClure Thornburgh. He was raised in Burlingame, but after decking the football coach senior year he transferred to Osage City High School and graduated in 1968.

Violet Rivas

Oct. 11, 1961 – Nov. 12, 2016

CARBONDALE—Violet “Vicky” Rivas died Nov. 12, 2106, at her home in Carbondale. She was 55.

She was born Oct. 11, 1961, at Clovis, N.M., the daughter of Ernest and Mary Farmer Arnold. She lived in Carbondale for the last 11 years.

She worked at Carbondale Attendance Center, USD. 434, as a cook and also worked at Carbondale Thriftway. She attended the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship.

She married Benito Joe Revis Oct. 4, 1976, at Clovis, N.M. He survives of the home.
