Virgil L. Silver

Dec. 21, 1927 – June 11,2017

TOPEKA — Virgil L. Silver, Lyndon, died Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka. He was 89.

He was born Dec. 21, 1927, at Burlingame, the son of Ralph and Lucille Hogle Silver. He grew up in Burlingame and graduated from Burlingame High School in 1945. In the late 1940s, he moved with his family to Lyndon, where he has lived since.

Donald Leon Urish

Nov. 11, 1931 – June 8, 2017

OVERBROOK — Donald Leon Urish died peacefully June 8, 2017, at Overbrook. He was 85.

He was born Nov. 11, 1931, at Scranton, the son of Lou and Ina Scovill Urish. He graduated from Scranton High School in 1949.

He married Nancy Badger on April 18, 1952. She survives.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956, which included a deployment to Germany during the Korean War, he returned to the family farm in Scranton. He lived and worked there for more than 30 years, until his retirement.

Maxine Miller

Dec. 1, 1924 – June 7, 2017

TOPEKA — Maxine Miller died Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Lexington Park Care Facility, Topeka. She was 92.

She was born Ruth Maxine Brecheisen Dec. 1, 1924, near Lyndon, the daughter of Clarence and Hallie McCreight Brecheisen. She lived all of her life near Lyndon until moving to Topeka in 2006.

Shirley Ellen Simmons

Feb. 6, 1937 – June 7, 2017

OVERBROOK — Shirley Ellen Simmons passed away peacefully, Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Brookside Retirement Community, Overbrook, with her daughter, Vicky and son, Doc by her side. She was 80.

She was born Feb. 6, 1937, at Bear Creek, Mo., in Cedar County, the daughter of the late, Dewey and Gladys King, Stockton, Mo.

Ronald Holland

June 14, 1938 – June 3, 2017

HAMILTON — Ronald “Ronnie” Holland, Wichita, died Saturday, June 3, 2017, after suffering a massive heart attack while attending an All-School Class Reunion at Hamilton. He was 78.

He was born June 14, 1938, at Hamilton, the son of Elwood and Velma Crowell Holland. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1955.

After graduation, he worked for several farmers and also on an oil-drilling rig in the Hamilton area. He then served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Carson, Colorado.

Robert Lee Barber

Oct. 4, 1932 – June 7, 2017

OVERBROOK — Robert Lee Barber, Overbrook, died Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at his home. He was 84.

He was born Oct. 4, 1932 at Allen, the son of Glen and Julia Hodgson Barber. He was raised on a farm. He attended several one-room schools throughout grade school, and graduated from Eskridge High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. For 27 and a half years he was employed at DuPont.

He married Wilma Baxter July 14, 1956, and to this union four children were born. She survives.

Ruby F. Stegman

March 16, 1928 – June 1, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Ruby F. Stegman, Wakarusa, died Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Petersons Nursing Home, Osage City. She was 89.

She was born in 1928 at Lebanon Mo., the daughter of Samuel B. and Mary Electa Eveland Gillette. She was one of nine children.

She was a homemaker and worked at various places in and around Topeka, including MAHS Cafe, Pauline Air Base Laundry, Frito Lay, and Jostens. She also cleaned houses in Topeka.

She married Victor J. Stegman, in 1946, at Pratt. He preceded her in death in Feb. 2002.

Keith Long Smulling

April 30, 1933 – June 2, 2017

EMPORIA — Keith Long Smulling, formerly of Osage City and Miller, died Friday, June 2, 2017, at his residence in Emporia. He was 84.

He was born April 30, 1933, southwest of Miller, the son of Wilbur Byron and Anna Mabel Long Smulling. He graduated from Miller High School in 1951.

He married Patricia “Patsy” J. Guy Feb. 14, 1954. The couple had traveled all 50 states together. She preceded him in death.

Eugene Robinson

Dec. 1, 1918 – June 2, 2017

OSAGE CITY — Eugene Robinson died Friday, June 2, 2017, at Vintage Park, Osage City. He was 98.

He was born Dec. 1, 1918, at Burlingame, the son of Fitzhugh and Lucille Griffin Robinson.

Gene, as he was known to all, grew up in Burlingame, lived many years in the Kansas City area before retiring to Holiday Cove on Pomona Lake. He had been at Vintage Park in Osage City for the last several years.

Elizabeth Miller

Oct. 22, 1920 – June 2, 2017

TOPEKA — Elizabeth Miller, 96, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2017 at Presbyterian Manor in Topeka, Kansas. She was 96.

She was born Oct. 22, 1920, in Lyon County, the daughter of Charles and Nellie Thomas Gilliland. She lived in Lyndon for 56 years before moving to Topeka in 2005.

She was a homemaker most of her life, but she had worked at Boeing in Wichita during World War II, at Smitty’s Dress Shop in Lyndon, and she was the Lyndon city treasurer for two years.
